Keyword research tools allow us to find the words and phrases that users are searching for around a certain topic.
I’ll use an example that’s relevant to Mercarto. Using a keyword research tool, I searched the topic ‘ecommerce platform’, and found that users are searching for some of these phrases: ecommerce platforms uk, ecommerce platform comparison, ecommerce platform meaning, ecommerce platform market share.
Well, if I use these phrases in the content on my website, I’m more likely to appear in the search results for these phrases. This means my website is more likely to get clicked on, and if you have a good quality website, this should equate to more customers.
No, it’s important to work out the user's intent behind certain searches. Back to the ecommerce platform example, someone searching ‘ecommerce platform market share’ probably isn’t looking to sign up to an ecommerce platform.
They’re probably conducting market research or looking for facts and figures.
However, someone searching ‘ecommerce platform comparison’ is probably considering signing up to an ecommerce platform, but they first want to compare and find the best fit for their requirements.
So this would be the ideal phrase to write some content around to attract the right kind of traffic.

Although it only gives the search volume data for the first few results, it’s still really useful for finding out the most popular keywords.
What I really like about this tool is you can search specifically for different search engines and social media platforms, including Google, YouTube, Bing, Amazon, eBay, Play Store, Instagram and Twitter.
There are also useful features which allow you to view just questions or prepositions, as well as filter by specific words or negative keywords (words you want to exclude from the results).
Answer The Public focuses on longer phrases, rather than words, which is useful for content on your ecommerce web pages, product descriptions and blog.
It sorts the data into questions, prepositions, comparisons, alphabetical and related searches.
It also allows you to download the results as a CSV if you want to further analyse and organise the data.
Just be aware that it has a daily limit for searches, so use it wisely.
Google’s Keyword Planner is the best and most thorough tool on this list. It gives search volumes for every result, shows the competition for how difficult it will be to rank for particular phrases and has in-depth filtering tools so you can find exactly what you’re looking for.
The only downside to this tool is that you’ll need to create a Google ads account and enter payment information, although you don’t have to spend any money or run ad campaigns.
Keyword Planner also shows trends in words and phrases, which can be useful when researching new products to add to your ecommerce store.
Tag Crowd allows you to enter a URL and it will give you a visual representation of the most used words on that website.
Although it may give the least accurate results out of all the tools in the list, it’s still a useful tool to have in your repertoire, mainly for 2 reasons:
Quite similar to Keyword Tool in that it gives a lot of data across different platforms but no specific volume or competition figures.
This tool is different from the rest on this list as it solely focuses on trends rather than specific keyword data.
It allows you to search by keyword, website or industry. This is especially useful for those in ecommerce and when you search the ecommerce topic you can view recent trending topics.
