Hannah Loves: How I Made £500 Using Mercarto

In this article we’re speaking to Hannah, Founder of Hannah Loves. We'll delve into the ins and outs of her face mask business, and find out exactly how she found success building her ecommerce store with Mercarto.

Q: A difficult task for aspiring entrepreneurs is deciding what to sell in their stores. How did you decide on face masks?

A: I’ve owned a sewing machine for years, and I spent a lot of my own time making the odd bits, challenging myself with new sewing projects.

Funnily enough, it was a friend that planted the entrepreneurial seed in my brain. She asked if I could make her a mask for work, which I was more than willing to do.

I made a batch of masks with some material I already owned and posted my work on social media. Straight away I was overwhelmed with messages asking how to purchase one!

When I was working out how I could make them available for people to buy online, I was already familiar with Mercarto and knew it was a risk-free way to start a business, so I was excited to start this new venture.

Q: So, how was the brand created?

A: After a lot of research, I handpicked a collection of cotton fabrics and beautiful patterns. I wanted the brand to be high quality, good value for money and lovingly handmade.

Q: How did you decide on the name ‘Hannah Loves’?

A: It’s everything that I love. Sewing, being creative, creating happy customers - all of it!

Q: Finding the right price for your products can be tricky in the beginning. How did you do it?

A: There are a few things to consider when pricing up your products:

  1. Know your market. Research what else is out there in the market and see what they price their products at so you have a benchmark.
  2. Calculate the cost of your items. This includes materials, resources, manufacturing, packaging, and of course, your time.
  3. Research the right pricing technique for you, so you have a consistent pricing strategy across your entire product range. 
  4. Remember, prices can always be changed! If materials become more expensive you can increase your prices. If you’re able to reduce your manufacturing costs, you can offer customers lower prices if you wish. The prices you set in the beginning aren’t set in stone.

Q: How did you make your first sales?

A: Social media has played a huge role in my sales, especially in the beginning. Not only posting my own photos of products, but customer photos created a big drive in sales.

Q: How have you marketed the business?

A: So far, it’s been purely word of mouth, social media and the support of my friends and family. That is really what will get you business off the ground at the start. 

Don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations, re-posts and help off those around you, you’d be surprised at how much they want to support your new business.

Q: What advice would you give to those starting their own ecommerce business?

A: Do it, you won’t regret it! All you need is an idea and a passion for what you’re selling.

Research into competitors, have a good knowledge of social media marketing and digital marketing, tell everyone about your store, use your personal social media platforms as a starting point and have fun with it!

If you are nervous about stock levels, you can always put a limit on stock like I did so you aren’t overwhelmed with orders when you’re starting out.

Q: What have you learnt from starting Hannah Loves? Is there anything you’d do differently?

A: I’ve learnt how willing people are to support your new business venture, and how those close to you want you to succeed and will help in any way they can.

I think I would have done more research into postage and packaging, as it’s something I didn’t think about until my orders came in. Packaging can make all the difference when receiving a product, and can make a customer even more excited about their order by adding a special touch.

Q: What does the future look like for Hannah Loves?

A: I’m eager to expand my product range and offer products that lots of customers have been asking for. I’ve been experimenting with dog accessories, children’s clothes, curtains, cushions and hair accessories.

Due to demand, I’m also adding personalised masks for business and hen parties, which is exciting!

Q: How has Mercarto helped you start your own business?

A: It’s provided me with the tools I need to fulfil orders and become creative with the design and products that I offer. I don’t have to worry about anything technical or manually manage orders, everything is automated and it makes running my business a lot easier.

If I do run into an issue, they have an excellent customer support team that is always on hand and go above and beyond to help. 

Q: Why did you choose Mercarto over another ecommerce platform?

A: I did test out a few other ecommerce platforms, but I gave up with most as they were too complicated or way too expensive for a small start-up business.

Q: How many orders have you had through your store so far?

A: I have had 77 orders through my Mercarto store and made over £500 in a couple of weeks. It’s way more than I was expecting, and it’s so encouraging to see the business flourish as it’s my first time starting an ecommerce store.

Q: Which products have been your best sellers?

A: My bestsellers have been the children’s products as well as the floral and plain fabrics.
